Do You Own One of Lowell George’s Strats?
You might. It would probably be a mid-70s Fender Stratocaster, which Lowell (of Little Feat) was favoring at the time, but could be something else.
Why am I asking? Here’s why, from the August 1976 issue of Guitar Player magazine:
GP: How many guitars have you had?
Lowell: I’ve had 50, 20 of which I no longer have because they’ve been stolen.
How do you manage to get so many stolen?
Just turn your back for a second, and they’re gone! If you play in bar bands in a town like Los Angeles, one wrong move and it’s all over…. I’ve lost 10 Strats and I’ve had about 30. The attrition rate for me has been very high, but from what I understand from a lot of people in L.A., it’s been a lot higher lately for other musicians.
For a while there I was carrying my guitar with me everywhere I went, and the only time I’d put it down maybe was to move a Hammond B-3 – and do you believe it, I’d be away for just a minute and my guitar would be gone.

He also noted in the interview that he is buying stock Strats “so if it gets stolen [he] can replace it easily.”
(Yes there are gear details in the interview – coming soon!)
Strangely, Lowell seemed to always sound great, so it wasn’t the guitar….
Lowell died in June 1979 at the age of 34, of a heart attack. The world lost a heck of a musician.
