EVH in the Studio, 1984
Cool ‘fly on the wall’ audio!
When you play your geetar by yourself, who do you sound like? Do you play other people’s riffs or your own?
I’ll go first: I sound like me, trying to play (lately) Edward Van Halen and Billy Gibbons riffs. Thirty years into my guitar-playing odyssey, I’m still trying to cop those feels.
It’s fun, but the greats we all try to emulate are long since over trying to play like anyone else. They have their own amazing styles, which is why it would be amazing to be a fly on the wall listening to any of them practice.
Case in point: Below is some audio of Edward Van Halen dicking around in his 5150 studio in 1984.
And just for kicks, in keeping with the theme of today’s post, after that is Ed copping the entire Eric Clapton Crossroads solo note for note, from memory. Making it even more awesome is that it’s a solo he probably hadn’t played for years before this was taped (for some TV interview).

Ed playing Crossroads

Eddie really did a heck of a job on Crossroads. Put a huge smile on my face!
